In November I presented on Cloud Computing at PubCon in Las Vegas. I sat on a panel with Mike Culver from Amazon Web Services. My focus was on helping determine truth from fiction--including all of the hype from Microsoft Azure, Google, Amazon, and others. Wow! Did I get feedback. So much so that I have followed it up with an article:

http://www.smartertools.com/blog/archive/2008/11/20/cloud-computing-challenges-benefits-and-the-future.aspx

As we investigate this potentially game-changing innovation, we should remember what Cloud Computing really is and--perhaps more importantly--what it isn't.

Be well,
Jeffrey J. Hardy

I thought someone did a cost analysis of some of the cloud computing offerings. As you start adding some enterprise features the cost becomes astronomical, compared with leasing a full server and installing it yourself. I couldn't find the article, but I think it came to 200/month extra using the cloud vs a traditional sever.

However, just like anything with every major vendor whether they are software (MS), hardware (VMWare), other (Amazon) etc joining it...the prices in no doubt will come way down and be more attractive.
