As I learned to do, back in the early days of XP, I have a list of things I do when I configure a clean Vista box, ie:
- Upgrade to SP1
- Turn off SuperFetch
- Turn-off UAC
- Clean-up the Start Menu
- Install Firefox

With those things done, I find Vista 64-bit to be a very comfortable, stable OS. There are some parts of the UI I find garish, and I have still hit the occasional 64-bit driver issue, but over-all I think its a rock solid offering.
My initial disdain for it probably came, as you mentioned, from slightly insufficient hardware, and the over-hype of features that got slashed before the release.

I concur. I've been happy with Vista so far. I've only been using it for about a month and a half and I'm already to the point that when I switch to my XP dev machine, I find myself trying to use features of Vista (such as the integrated search from the Start Menu).
